VA Interne2 and IPv6 Programs: Enhancing our Service to the Veteran
Steven Pirzchalski, IPv6 Transition Manager Department of Veterans Affairs
The VA has been a leading agency in the federal transition to IPv6. Now that the VA has met the IPv6 milestones established by OMB, the focus of the IPv6 transition activity is shifting to develop an enterprise-wide transition plan and utilizing IPv6 to improve our ability to support our nation’s Veterans. To this end, the VA has launched its Internet2 program to demonstrate new applications and technologies, including IPv6.
Attendees will learn:
• VA’s plans for IPv6
• How the VA is working with the Internet2 community
• How to partner with the VA in future IPv6 activities

Developing Integrated Solutions for TIC, IPv6 and Networx
Dale Geesey, Senior Partner, Synexi
Federal agencies are being pressured by numerous regulations, directives and initiatives that expand across the entire Federal Enterprise. While each of these efforts will provide benefits to individual agencies or the federal government as a whole, approaching them with a “silo” mentality will cost more time and resources in the long run. This presentation will discuss several of the ongoing initiatives in the federal government and identify the benefits associated with creating joint solutions sets.
Attendees will learn:
• Background of several federal initiatives
• How many initiatives are intricately linked
• How to approach developing a common solution set for these initiatives

Transition to IPv6: Take a Competitive Leap Forward - Lessons Learned for Government from Commercial IPv6 Implementations
Cody Christman, Director of Product Engineering, NTT Communications | NTT America
NTT America operates one of the world’s largest commercial IPv6 networks every day. This presentation will share what it takes to be successful in enhancing an existing network infrastructure to support both IPv6 and IPv4, and then how to leverage the benefits IPv6 brings to the network. Conference attendees will learn commercial industry lessons learned and best practices for the government transition to IPv6 and beyond. Attendees will receive a whitepaper handout.
Attendees will:
• Learn real world experiences in IPv6 transition and implementation
• Experience in supporting both IPv4 and IPv6
• Explore what it takes to successfully implement IPv6
• Discuss real world security issues from multiple years of experience
• Review best practices from one of the largest international IPv6 commercial network and managed service providers

Post OMB 5-22: IPv6 Transition
Dave Green, VP Research & Development, Command Information
IPv6 transition isn't just a technical challenge - it's a business continuity issue as IPv4 addressing reaches its scaling limits in 2010 - 2011. Without a well thought out transition plan, your agency’s customer-facing systems, web portals, e-commerce sites, e-mail, extranet sites, etc. will not be visible to all users. With IPv6-capable devices in every network today, migrating your security infrastructure is also a concern. Command Information’s David Green will present a simple, affordable risk mitigation plan for Enterprise IPv6 transition.
Attendees will Learn:
• How IPv6 is an enabling technology
• Why IPv6 transition is a business continuity issue
• The timeline and steps for a migration plan

An End-to-End IPv6 Application to Improve Organizational Effectiveness
Junaid Islam, CTO, Piano Networks
Latif Ladid, President IPv6 Forum
This live demonstration will showcase the first native IPv6 video application where remote speakers from San Jose, CA and Luxembourg interact with the conference audience via a web browser. Unlike current IPv4 based video services, this IPv6 application does not use expensive servers. The application (Vidder.com) enables any PC to broadcast live video to a web browser – even from IPv4 networks. Vidder.com is an excellent example of how IPv6 can be used to dramatically lower the cost of distributed communication services like videoconferencing and has applications from e-government collaboration to the virtual classroom.
Attendees will learn:
• How IPv6 services can run over existing IPv4 networks
• How IPv6 enables ad hoc data and video distribution without the deployment of servers
• How IPv6 based collaboration can improve productivity

Global IPv6 Deployment and Lessons Learned
Lawrence Hughes, Chairman, InfoWeapons
This session will address the status of IPv6 deployment in areas such as Beijing, Seoul, Manila, Potsdam and Taipei to include the major players, significant projects and overall status. Japan, Korea, PRC and Malaysia are among the furthest along, with other Asian countries not far behind. The EU is about one year behind Asia. The U.S. (outside of the DoD) is in dead last along with Africa and Latin America. Mr. Hughes' company (InfoWeapons) is one of the few American companies actually producing dual stack network products which have obtained the prestigious "IPv6-Ready" gold certification.
Attendees will learn:
• The status of IPv6 deployment in the U.S. relative to other regions
• The impact this situation could have on U.S. competitiveness
• How to recognize real support by vendors as opposed to "lip service"
• Which products and technologies can benefit the most from IPv6 and why
• Where they can get real IPv6 products and service in the U.S. today

IPv6 Innovative Approaches to IPv6 Transitioning: Architect Secure Integrations of IPv6 Into Your Network Today
Peder Jungck, CTO/Founder, CloudShield
Leverage your existing IPv4 infrastructure while simultaneously transitioning to IPv6 can be an intra-network communication and security challenge. By understanding the architectural requirements to transition your infrastructure you can minimize costly network upgrades and dedicated build-outs with secure gateways. This session will present a behind the scenes look at upcoming approaches that minimize the impact and reduce transition time to IPv6 in less than the proposed 25 years.
Attendees will learn:
• How to secure gateways between IPv4 and IPv6 networks
• How to leverage your existing IPv4 infrastructure
• How to minimize software upgrades and costly build-outs
• How to reduce the transition time to IPv6 networks

Closing Session: Federal IPv6 Next Steps
Dale Geesey, Senior Partner, Synexi
Dave Rubal, Senior Manager, Federal Partner Systems Engineering, US/Canada Channels, Cisco
Chuck Fullerton, Director of Horizontal Fusion, Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) - Dahlgren
The US Government has successfully achieved the primary milestones identified in the OMB Memorandum 05-22: Transitioning to IPv6; however, these were the first steps on the transition of the Federal Enterprise Architecture to IPv6. The question now is: what are the next steps? This panel will discuss the activities currently underway in the Federal Government and Industry to define what the next steps should be and what actions agencies need to consider to continue on a successful transition path to enterprise wide IPv6 transition.
Attendees will learn:
• Who is currently working on IPv6 Next Steps
• What they need to do to keep their agency on a successful IPv6 transition track
• How to show ROI and tie their IPv6 transition activities to their enterprise architecture
